This year marks twenty years of collaboration between the British fashion designer Paul Smith and Maharam. Guided by mutual trust, the longevity of our relationship is a testament to the ongoing creative commitment of both studios and has resulted in over forty textiles that reimagine classic motifs through inventive use of color, scale, rhythm, and proportion.
With a limitless curiosity for wide-ranging cultural references and idiosyncratic combinations of pattern and color, many of Smith’s designs begin with an interest in reinterpreting traditional apparel motifs including stripes, plaid, paisley, polka dot, and houndstooth.
Smith’s work draws upon his extensive library of visual references collected from across art, design, and architecture, encompassing vintage botanicals, needlepoint, and ironwork.
